slow philosophy Just because we can, doesn't mean we should

The Slow movement isn't about being slack, it's about recognizing the value of quality over quantity — that great things take time to create and time to really enjoy. The simple truth is that if we continue to increase the speed of our lives and the quantity of our consumption, our overall quality of life will continue to decrease. In our society life may be more exciting than it was 30 years ago, but it is not more enjoyable. Our lives are rushed and cluttered. We are anxious for what we don't have when we should be gratefully enjoying all that we do have.

Time really is precious, so the Slow movement is all about taking deliberate steps to utilize it better and enjoy it more. And I have some very Slow, considered thoughts to contribute, but not right at this moment.

So, in the meantime, I would like to recommend Carl Honoré's seminal text on the topic, In Praise of Slow. And here's a quote to get you started: The Slow philosophy can be summed up in a single word: balance. Be fast when it makes sense to be fast, and be slow when slowness is called for.
