My interests and pastimes
I am particularly interested in human needs, history, anthropology, conflict resolution, natural design, and all of the storytelling arts.

I enjoy movies, reading, cooking, travel, the outdoors, running, sport in general, music, and (rather to my surprise) handyman stuff.

A lucky word lover

I am one of those lucky people for whom work is no longer work.

Sure, luck isn't responsible for the business and books I have crafted, but I do feel lucky to love words. Why? Because confident writers have a major advantage over everyone else in the knowledge economy: we are good at delivering our service. Often, delivery is the gatekeeper to success. If clients (internal and external) don't want to read our words, it really doesn't matter if we have anything useful to share.

I view unread or unreadable words as a depressing waste society cannot afford, and I love helping others to reverse that situation. I am a word merchant who truly values words. Fewer words, because your time is important.

I thought my life would be spent travelling the world writing novels and screenplays, but I have realized I can do that and more. I can help others in a direct way to address some of the major problems I have observed.

I am privileged to live in Auckland, New Zealand, next to a world-class park, with my gorgeous wife and twin daughters. In my work I get to travel and help people. I am one of those lucky people.

Qualifications and experience

I have been writing professionally since completing a BA in Linguistics from Victoria University of Wellington in 1989.

In addition to the publications listed in the bibliography above, I have written dozens of newspaper and magazine columns and articles, and I am currently completing a novel and a book on information overload.

Through my own businesses (including an inbound travel agency, a web design agency, and an online retailer — all sold) and my consulting and teaching work with clients, I have worked on thousands of documents, many of them industry-specific. This year I have also reviewed dozens of documents as one of the judges of the New Zealand WriteMark Plain English Awards.

Earlier in my career I worked as a freelance photojournalist and proofreader. I was also fortunate to receive scriptwriting training from South Pacific Pictures.
